Det het tidligere Kristiansand sentralsykehus og lå i Tordenskjoldsgate i Kvadraturen (sentrum), i lokaler som siden ble overtatt av Høyskolen i Agder. Dagens sykehus ble reist på 1980-tallet som Vest-Agder Sentralsykehus, ved det gamle Eg sykehus på Eg, 2 km nord for sentrum. Sykehuset har moderne lokaler og er sentralisert geografisk med fullverdig klinisk og behandlingsmessig tilbud. Det finnes fødeklinikk, psykiatrisk døgnbehandling, rusomsorg og avhengighetsbehandling, og ambulansestasjon på Eg. Klinikk for psykisk helse – psykiatri og avhengighetsbehandling har døgnpsykiatrisk behandling for voksne i Kristiansand og Arendal. Ved Sørlandet sykehus Kristiansand finnes også en rekke administrasjons- og driftsstøttetjenester for Sørlandet sykehus HF, samt forsknings- og utviklingsenheten ved helseforetaket."

English: "Hospital of Southern Norway (Norwegian: Sørlandet sykehus) is the name of the trust which runs the hospitals in the counties of Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder. The general hospitals in the Agder counties were joined together under one trust by the state, with Helse Sør-Øst as owner. The trust is organised into six clinics, which have medical specialities independent of their geographical placement. The five clinics are: Medical clinic Surgical clinic Clinic for psychiatric health - psychiatry and dependency behaviour Medical service clinic (related functions) Clinic for radiology Rehabilitation unit Hospital of Southern Norway has large centres at Arendal, Kristiansand, and Flekkefjord. There are also smaller centres at Risør, Grimstad, Mandal and Farsund. In addition, there also small psychiatric drop-ins in many of the smaller municipalities, often with responsibility for patients from neighbouring municipalities. In 2004, the hosplital took responsibility for alcoholism treatment in the Agder counties, and this came under the psychiatric and pschchological treatment in Arendal and Kristiansand."
