This bridge is an example of a "Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge". The way it was described by the operator is that the huge concrete feet settle down to the road and the deck tilts up and retracts into itself. At one point this was the 3rd largest bridge of it's type in the world. (visit link)

A sign on the bridge indicates that they 60 minutes advance warning for bridge openings.
