The Sunspot Astronomy and Visitors Center is the location of the sign that represents the sun, in this huge solar system model that extends from Cloudcroft (the sun) to the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo (Neptune) at a scale of 1:250 million.

The model includes a large inflatable sun at the Sunspot Astronomy and Visitors Center, and road signs (that represent the planets) which were installed by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (Roswell District 2, Tularosa Maintenance Yard).

This Solar System Model is the largest west of the Mississippi River, the 3rd largest in the U.S., and the 6th largest in the world.
Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated:
The scientific Principle being demonstrated is the size of our solar system.

Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?:
1) The experiement is not well signed; there could be a better sign introducing the beginning, so that visitors will pay attention to where the experiment begins (otherwise they might not catch onto the idea until they see the 2nd or 3rd sign). 2) The experiment consists of signs placed next to a busy road with very little shoulder, so there is no room to park and take advantage of photo opportunities.

When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public:
Daylight hours are best, but this experiment is available 24-7.
