1886: Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that corporations have the same rights as living persons.
1896: The opening ceremonies of the 1896 Summer Olympics, the first modern Olympic Games, are held in Athens.
1906: San Francisco earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.8) on the San Andreas Fault destroys much of San Francisco, California, USA, killing at least 3,000, with 225,000–300,000 left homeless, and $350 million in damages.
1916: Robert Baden-Powell publishes The Wolf Cub's Handbook in the U.K., establishing the basis of the junior section of the Scouting movement, the Wolf Cubs (modern-day Cub Scouts).
1926: U.S. Route 66 is established.
1936: The Santa Fe railroad in the United States inaugurates the all-Pullman Super Chief passenger train between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California.
1946: In his speech at Westminster College, in Fulton, Missouri, Winston Churchill talks about the Iron Curtain.
1956: President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Federal Aid Highway Act, creating the Interstate Highway System

1986: "Captain Midnight" interrupts the HBO satellite feed.
1990: United States invasion of Panama: General Manuel Noriega, the deposed "strongman of Panama", surrenders to American forces.
