As you make your way over the bridge over the Illinois River into Marseilles, on the other side just beyond the bridge is a population sign.
The sign states:
"Welcome to
Marseilles
Population 4800"
Marseilles is a typical river town along the Illinois. At this town is the Marseilles Lock and Dam, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The dam is visible, below, from the bridge. There are canals that circumvent the dam that once went to the Nabisco box factory and to an old hyrdo electric generating plant, both to the west of the bridge. At the south end of the bridge is the Illini State Park, where you can camp, fish or watch the barge traffic.
