In the 1920's the Ayers built a trading post on the grounds of the present day museum and trading post. Originally the store was a general store of types, with rental cabins, dining hall and more built shortly thereafter. In the 1920's a boat building business was developed as was guided fishing tours.
Today, the original gas pumps stand at the front of the vintage trading post building. Inside the store displays tell the story of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and the history of the store. The grounds, on the shores of Lake Mille Lacs, you can see a vintage rental cabin and the remains of the boat works.
It is like walking back in history, all on the shores of Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota's third largest lake. The Mille Lacs Indian Museum is next door.
Today, the trading post/museum sells hand crafted Native made items as well as beading supplies, craft supplies and other goods. It looks much like it did nearly 100 years ago.
