Duke Memorial Church was founded in 1885. Construction on the current sanctuary was begun in 1907 and completed in 1908.

The church was originally called Trinity Methodist Church. When they built the current sanctuary, it was named Memorial Methodist Church. In 1925, the name was again changed to honor one of it's founders, Washington Duke. Duke Memorial was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
