Salem Cemetery
The Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 brought to this spot a number of German Lutheran immigrants from Ukraine, Russia. These families began the history of what is now Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church at Duck and Elm in Stillwater.
These immigrants purchased a quarter section of land in 1893. All but five acres of this land was sold, and the proceeds used to buy supplies for a bon-a-fide church building. This congregation known as Friedenskirche, was incorporated in 1892 and originally stood on the rise, 150 ft to the west of the cemetery. Services were in German and led by various members. Around 1909 the membership voted to move the congregation into Stillwater.
