The village of Sandycove got briefly mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses (Chapter 1 - Telemachus) and the quote got at the roadside welcome sign.

The opening scene of Ulysses is set at Sandycove Martello Tower (now James Joyce museum). On occassion of Bloomsday Centenary in 2004, Sandycove Tidy Towns Committee placed a granite welcome sign at Glasthule Road. The Ulysses quote reads:
- We can drink it black, Stephen said thirstily. There's a lemon in the locker.
- O, damn you and your Paris fads! Buck Mulligan said. I want Sandycove milk.
