This is one of two First Baptist Churches within two blocks of each other near the State Capitol. This First Baptist Church congregation was formed in 1868 when black members of the biracial First Baptist Church on North Salisbury Street left to form their own congregation. The cornerstone for this church was laid in 1904. However, both churches say they were founded in 1812 and both are technically correct.

Black members of the North Salisbury Street First Baptist Church, established in 1812 as a biracial congregation, requested separation in 1868 to form their own church. They asked for the present lot in the 1870s. Black members had begun discussing plans to separate in the late 1850s and actually formed a separate Sunday School in 1865.
The cornerstone of this church was laid in 1904 and the church is still active in the community today.
