This grinder has a 6-inch stone and most likely was used to grind wheat into flour. It was driven by a belt from another power source via the wide pulley at one end. The Mormon religion stresses self-sufficiency and many people in this area, not just farmers, still grind their own flour, even if they don't grow the grain.
