In Norwood, on and incorporated into the Norwood Public Safety Building wall, is a plaque and brick pattern that memorializes the death of six firefighters in Worcester.
The building is located along Nahaton Street, near the intersection with Lenox Street and across the street from a strip mall. The memorial is on the right side of the fire engine garage doors, when facing the building, and behind a bell and flagpole.
There are two parts to it. The obvious part is the bronze plaque. On it is the following:
"Worcester Fire Department
[Fire Hat with '6']
F.F. Paul A. Brotherton ---- F.F. Jeremiah M. Lucey
Rescue Co. 1 --------------- Rescue Co. 1
LT. Thomas Spencer --------- F.F. Timothy P. Jackson
Ladder Co. 2 --------------- Ladder Co. 2
F.F. James Jay F. Lyons III- F.F. Joseph T. McQuirk
Engine Co. 3 --------------- Engine Co. 3
Last Alarm December 3, 1999
Box 5-1438
These six bricks were recovered from the Worcester cold storage warehouse fire. Each brick represents one of the six firefighters who lost his life on that day."
Above the plaque are six bricks aligned vertically and surrounded on three sides by granite.
The Worcester Fire of 1999 was one of the worst fires in recent times. The public safety building was completed in 2003, soon after the Worcester Fire.
