Jude Fawley is a bright man forced to work as a stonemason and trapped in an unhappy marriage to Arabella. Fortunately for him his wife leaves him and he heads for the city. In the city he meets his cousin Sue Bridehead. He falls in love with her, but she marries Jude’s former school teacher, Phillotson, after Jude tells her he is already married.
Sue’s marriage to Phillotson does not work out and she joins Jude on his travels. Jude wanders from town to town finding occasional work as a stonemason. Eventually the couple have two children and Jude’s son by Arabella, Juey, joins them.
The family have difficulty getting lodging because of their unmarried state. Sue tells Juey that they cannot get lodgings because there are too many of them. Sue and Jude return later and find that Juey has killed the children and then hanged himself in order to reduce the family’s number. The couple are mortified. Sue returnd to religion, believing God has punished her for not marrying Jude. She returnto Phillotson.
