Annabella Legrange is an awkward child, but is befriended by the family’s groom, Manuel Mendoza. When she is 17 she is told by her father that she is to marry one of his friends. She refuses and her father tells her that she is not her mother’s daughter, but of a woman her father had met in the town. She runs away and is found by Manuel. Manuel hides her, but her father eventually finds her. In the ensuing row her father falls and bangs his head on a rock. The pair have no choice but to go on the run.
The couple pose as cousins and work for a farmer. The farmer eventually assaults Annabella and they are forced to leave. They go to market and eventually get work with a more benign couple. They decide to get married, but at the reception a drunk sea captain has a go at Annabelle, Manuel intervenes, and in the fight the seaman dies. Manuel goes to jail. Annabella returns to her mother to get legal help for Manuel. Eventually Annabella, Manuel and Annabella’s mother are reconciled.
