Peter Greenbank comes back from sea to find his wife has died and his son, Roddy, has been neglected. He takes the lad back to Langley, where he was born, and arranges for Roddy to lodge with the Lee family whilst he goes back to sea. Roddy takes a shine to Mary Ellen Lee. Meanwhile, there is a wage snatch from the courier for the local mine. The courier, Gabriel Roystan, is murdered by Dan Bannaman and his woodsman, Pat Feeler. They cannot bury the body immediately and come back at night to do the deed. Unfortunately, Peter and Roddy come across the pair of felons. Peter is murdered and he and Roddy are thrown into a quarry. Roddy is later saved, but can’t remember what happened. Gabriel Roystan’s son, Hal is orphaned and sent out to work. Roddy is brought up by Kate Makepiece

Eleven years pass and Roddy’s artistic talent is about to be recognised. He goes to Newcastle and is offered a scholarship to art college. He has taken to painting Martha Bannerman, Dan Bannaman’s daughter, and is in love with her. Mary Ellen, who is in service with Davidson household, had hoped to be Roddy’s wife, but is let down by Roddy.

In Hexham (Blanchland) Roddy tries to approach Martha Bannerman, but is rebuffed. Further, he is warned off by Dan Bannerman. Hal tries to reason with Roddy and they end up having a fight. They make up and wend their way home. Bannerman and Feeler waylay them giving them a beating and Hal is stabbed to make it look like Roddy killed Hal. Both men survive, but Roddy is thrown into jail. Whilst in jail Roddy remembers the murder of his father and tells Mary Ellen to get the Sheriff to dig for a grave. The police dig the grave and find Gabriel Roystan.

The Sheriff goes to interview Bannerman. Bannerman deinies involvement, but Feeler panics. Bannerman pulls a gun, but has a heart attack. Feeler rides off. Hal searches day and night to find Feeler. He eventually tracks Feeler down and hangs him.

Roddy takes his art scholarship to Newcastle. He stays with the Cottles in Newcastle. Alfred Cottle is not a well man and eventually Roddy starts an affair with his wife, Medeleine. The Cottles decide to move to London and want to take Roddy with him. Anxious to stop Roddy going Mary Ellen gets Roddy to give her a child. The Davidsons kick Mary Ellen out and she is disowned by her widower father. Kate Makepeace takes her in.

Hal buys a farm with compensation money he gets from the mine his dad worked for. He makes a success of the farm. One day on his way back from buying a bull he is attacked by Martha Bannerman and her brother. They tie up Hal and hide his body in the barn of their late father’s barn. Hal is rescued by Kate’s intuition and his faithful dog, led by Mary Ellen. He sees a lot more of Mary Ellen, in fact Hal delivers her baby daughter. Kate Makepiece dies and Mary Ellen and Hal marry.

Roddy misses Kate’s funeral. Mary Ellen confronts Roddy with his baby, but Roddy announces he is to marry Madeleine Cottle. Alfred Cottle has died of a heart condition.

Twenty five years pass by. Kate Roystan is due to get married to Harry Baker. The night before the wedding Hal gives Harry two hundred pounds. The day of the wedding Harry disappears to Australia with the money.

On the rebound, Kate meets Ben Hamilton and falls in love with him. Hamilton is a rich American researching his family roots. He surprises Kate one day by announcing that he has bought Bannerman’s farm. Further, Martha Bannerman was his mother, but that he did not get on with her. Kate and Ben try to keep Ben’s identity from Hal, but the truth comes out. Kate goes to live with Ben, but a drunken Hal follows with his gun. He brawls with Ben and Kate is shot in the confusion. Kate pulls through, and a remorseful Hal agrees to the marriage.
