Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was formed in 1975 and included this small station on Iona, at that time a unit of 7 men with a two-man manual pump stored in a small shed at the village hall. It had been formed in 1956 by the then Western Fire Area Joint Committee.
Up until 1 April 2013 the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was the largest fire and rescue service in Scotland, and one of the largest in Europe. Its territory ranged from the densely populated Glasgow to remote rural and island communities. It has since been amalgamated into the single Scottish Fire and Rescue Service which has its headquarters in Perth.
Practice night is Tuesday and when I was on Iona, first week of August 2013, the web site and logos on the tender and the logo on the information board to the left of the main garage door still show that the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was in operation.
The 'phone number of the unit's building is 01681 700619.
