1890: Death of Vincent van Gogh: van Gogh apparently shoots himself, dying two days later.
1900: The Gold Standard Act is ratified, placing the United States currency on the gold standard.
1910: Slavery in China, which has existed since the Shang dynasty, is now illegal.
1920: Prohibition in the United States begins with the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution coming into effect.
1930: One-year conscription comes into force in France.
1940: President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt, addressing a joint session of the U.S. Congress, asks for an extraordinary credit of approximately $900 million to finance construction of at least 50,000 airplanes per year.

1955: Claudette Colvin (a fifteen-year-old African-American girl) refuses to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, to a white woman after the driver demands it. She is carried off the bus backwards while being kicked and handcuffed and harassed on the way to the police station.
