It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
At this point the milestone is 53.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 74 miles from the port of Liverpool.
The milestones on this canal normally have the distances on plates screwed to each side of the milestone. In this case the Liverpool plate is missing and the distance has been painted on.
