The display is inside the paid section of the museum, so admission is required to visit it. See the Centre's website for hours and admission, as these change depending on the time of year.

A description of where this slab of wood came from is written on a plaque:
A Douglas-fir seedling started to grow on Koksilah Ridge - near what is now Duncan - 1300 years ago. The tree grew for centuries until around 1962 when it was blown down in hurricane winds - just a few years after a dedication ceremony was held to protect the small grove of ancient trees. Shortly after, this cross-section was donated to the museum.
The plaque also lists the following events and where they occurred in the rings:
  • AD 640 - The Douglas-fir seedling started to grow
  • 868 - Earliest book published in China
  • 1000 - Vikings explore North America
  • 1206 - Genghis Khan rises to power
  • 1271 - Marco Polo travelled to China
  • 1492 - Columbus reached America
  • 1592 - Shakespeare: "Richard III"
  • 1862 - Pioneer settlers arrive in Cowichan Valley
  • 1867 - Confederation of Canada
  • 1897 - Klondike Gold Rush
  • 1945 - World War II ends
