My commentary - From the documentation below, the date on the building is for the construction of the entry and the steeple. The rest of the building was constructed in 1864.

From the Kansas Historic Resources Inventory:

"Present Function Remarks:
The church was used until 1963 when a new church and school were built at 820 Birch Street. In 1981, restoration included vine removal, stone replacement, backlit stained-glass windows, carpeting, floor repair, pew furnishing, and stained woodwork. The original Holy Family Church now opens for special occasions and for its Christmas carol program.

Residential/Commercial/Religious Style:
Gothic Revival

Material and Condition Remarks:
The original sandstone came from a local quarry. Sand was hauled from the Kansas River.

General Remarks:
The rear of the altar was used as a sacristy for years until a new 18-foot by 18-foot sacristy consisting of one room, the same height of the church and built of sandstone to match the church, was built on the southeast corner of the church. Alois, George, and Stephen Hadl did the masonry work on the sacristy, and Franz Blechel dressed and faced the rock. In 1896, parish men also hauled stone from a large sandstone quarry three miles southwest of town to complete a 26-foot by 20-foot addition facing north with a vestibule, 60-foot steeple, and 5-foot cross. An underground space for the furnace was built in 1897."
Year of construction: 1897
