Kittrell was the home of some popular resorts and hotels in the middle of the 1800's and the nearby railroad line made it possible for Easterners to enjoy the "milder" and "more healthful" climate of the South. Episcopalians among the guest would have sought out a local church where they could worship.
St. James is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places with a "significant period" of 1850 to 1874, which means the church was built during that period.
St. James currently operates as a mission parish, which means that services are not held here every Sunday, but on a rotating schedule.
The church building is well maintained and the grounds are well kept. Little information is to be had about the church, since it doesn't have an office. I am trying through the historic society and the local Episcopal Diocese to find the construction date and some background. For now, I'll use the latest possible date 12/31/1874, for the date the church was built.
