De officiële naam luidt Onze Lieve Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen. In de volksmond staat deze kerk echter bekend als Koeliekerk. Dit vanwege het opschrift "Hic domus dei est et porta coeli", dit is het huis van God en de poort van de hemel.
Vanaf de Reformatie tot aan het begin van de 19de eeuw waren in Nederland de protestanten aan de macht en moesten de katholieken hun kerkdiensten in schuilkerken houden. Nadat in 1848 de vrijheid van godsdienst grondwettelijk werd vastgelegd was de Hartebrugkerk de eerste katholieke kerk die in Leiden werd gebouwd.
De Hartebrugkerk maakt sinds 1 oktober 2012 deel uit van de Leidse fusie-parochie HH. Petrus en Paulus, Bisdom Rotterdam.
The official name is Our Lady Immaculate. Popularly, however, this church is known as Koeliekerk. This is because of the inscription "Hic est domus Dei et porta coeli", this is the house of the Lord and the gate to heaven.
From the Reformation to the beginning of the 19th century in the Netherlands the Protestants were in power and the Catholics had to hold their church services in secret churches. After the constitutional freedom of religion was established in 1848 the Hartebrugkerk was the first Catholic church built in Leiden.
Since October 1, 2012 the Hartebrugkerk makes part of the Leiden Parish HH. Peter and Paul, Diocese of Rotterdam.
