In Randers, where one of Helen Schou's major works, the Jutland Stallion, attracts visitors from near and far, a somewhat less known work from her hand is located. The fountain with a horse being attacked by a snake, is characterized by a vivid expression that testify to the artist's love for, and careful studies of horses.
Sculptor Helen Schou was the grand old Lady of Danish sculpture, and one of the 20th century's greatest female role models. When she celebrated her 100th birthday, the newspaper Berlingske wrote an article about her life:
"You must know a horse's reactions and character," said Helen Schou who have "lived with horses," as she puts it. She was not only an accomplished horseman, designed numerous anatomy studies, but also dissected at the Agricultural University. "These things are necessary to create horse sculptures," she says, adding: "But the drawing is the alpha and omega. If you cannot draw, you cannot create sculptures". Many studies is behind the final work. And the details must be in place in the whole picture.
