This marker explains the early days of the automobile on the National Road in Western Maryland and its many summits that the early automobile could not climb without stopping at the top and being refreshed, along with its occupants.
Along with refreshment, Town Hill was known as “The Beauty Spot of Maryland” simply because of its outstanding overlook, which still remains today.
This marker was placed at the turn of the century by America’s Byways as part of the Maryland’s National Road Project.
