This tower is part of the old military fortifications at Macaulay Point. The original battery was built in the 1890s, and was later improved in WWII. The current tower was one of the WWII improvements, built on the same site as an original tower. A 25 m long tunnel, built in 1895, leads from the northeast up the slope and comes out just behind the tower. The tower is only a modest 10 or so feet tall, but, being perched on top of a hill, it has a great view of the battery remains below and the waters off Victoria.
