This church was founded in 1844 by German immigrants from Melle and Buer who came in 1839. St. Paul's is a charter member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, founded in 1847.
The church building was built of hand-hewn stone in 1858. It is the oldest L.C.M.S. church in use west of the Mississippi River. The tower in the front of the church was added in 1881. The church has an 1870 Pfeffer organ which is the oldest in existence.
