The title of the artwork, 'Porten Mot Kontinenten', can be translated as 'Gateway to the Continent' in English.
It was donated by the company of Kockums, Mek Verkstadds AB. This was a large industrial company in Malmo that at the time of the anniversary specialised in ship building.
At one time the company was the largest employer in Malmo and its ship yard was one of the largest in the world. The company still exists but it ceased ship building in 1986. The volume of shipping has also significantly decreased and the port area has been redeveloped with apartments and restaurants being built.
The support column of the art work has a plaque on it with details of its history.
