The Charles and Theresa Roper House is also known as the “Hilan Castle” or simply as “The Castle”. The Ropers arrived in Newport about 1910 and The Castle was constructed for them by local builder Charles Bickford from 1912 to 1913. The building was designed in the Castellated mode of the 20th Century Gothic Style.
The building was constructed on a steep hillside with access from the top floor off Alder Street.
The Hilan Castle features a crenellated parapet, tripartite groupings of narrow windows in the manner of medieval fenestration with stone mullions and transom bars, a central turret in the facade, and a rounded corner tower.
The building was converted to multiple-family use in 1975 and was placed on the National Register on December 9, 1981.
