1918: Moscow becomes the capital of Soviet Russia; The United States Congress establishes time zones and approves daylight saving time (DST goes into effect on March 31)
1928: Charles Lindbergh is presented the Medal of Honor for his first Transatlantic flight.
1938: Oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia
1948: U.S. President Truman signs Executive Order 9981, ending racial segregation in the United States Armed Forces.
1958: The Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants 23–17 to win the NFL Championship Game, the first to go into sudden death overtime and "The Greatest Game Ever Played"
1968: Former U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy marries Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis on the Greek island of Skorpios.
1978: Karl Wallenda of the Flying Wallendas dies after falling off a tight-rope between two hotels in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
1988: Pan Am Flight 103 is blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing a total of 270 people. Those responsible are believed to be Libyans.
1999: The 71st Academy Awards are held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California with Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture.
