This is a 4-mile trail to the Whitney Portal. The trail follows what is said to be the original track of the first expedition to the summit of Mount Whitney. The sign at the trailhead states that it the trail includes a 2700 ft. strenuous climb and cautions that some might find it easier to start at the Whitney Portal Trailhead and hike downhill if possible.
