St George's Cathedral was designed by Edmund Thomas Blacket in 1879 and work started on October 1st of that year with the Foundation Stone being laid on November 2nd 1880 by the Governor, Sir William Robinson. Blacket died in 1883 and did not see his only work in Western Australia completed.
The Cathedral is built in English Victorian Gothic Revival style. It is built of locally made bricks from clay pits in what is now called Queen’s Gardens and stone quarried on Rottnest Island.
The tower and tall spire as on the original plans were not constructed; instead a castellated squat tower was constructed in 1902
