Named in 1867 for George Davidson (1825-1911), a pioneer scientist and surveyor.

The easiest way to access the glacier is by boat, but hiking is also possible. Of course, the glacier can be viewed by air, but there aren't any good helicopter landing sites. Tours are available from Skagway. It is a 1 hour ferry and then a canoe ride up the river to reach the glacier.

The glacier is currently retreating. It flows into the Chilkat Inlet.

It can be viewed from anywhere within the Chilkat Inlet.
