Stortoget covers 2500 square metres and was laid out in the 1530’s. A water reservoir underneath the square used to supply the nearby buildings but is no longer used for this purpose. The fountain was placed on the site of the reservoir and various parts of the well depict historical events in the city. This
tourism website has a few further details.
The fountain itself is circular and is surrounded by a low stone wall. It has a series of very close foaming jets in the centre of it with a height of about 5 feet which fall into a surrounding pool of water. It is positioned in front of the city hall.
