The Massachusetts Monument is a granite memorial erected
by the commonwealth in 1908 in memory of Massachusetts’s soldiers and sailors who died in North Carolina during the Civil War. The units stationed in North Carolina are displayed on plaques on the base. The main inscription reads:
THE
COMMONWEALTH
OF
MASSACHUSETTS
ERECTS THIS

GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF HER
SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
WHO DIED IN THE
DEPARTMENT OF
NORTH CAROLINA
