1923: U.S. President Warren G. Harding, dies of a heart attack and is succeeded by Vice President Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States.
1933: The first alleged modern sighting of the Loch Ness Monster occurs.
1943: 173 people are killed in a crush while trying to enter an air-raid shelter at Bethnal Green tube station in London.
1953: President Harry S. Truman announces the United States has developed a hydrogen bomb.
1963: The Beatles record their debut album Please Please Me in a single day at the Abbey Road Studios in London.
1973: The first handheld mobile phone call is made by Martin Cooper of Motorola in New York City.
1983: Ronald Reagan declassifies the GPS system for public use; it would be shut down again in 1990 for the Gulf War and re-activated again in 1993.
