This marker is found inside the Dubuque Monument at Mines of Spain State Park. Julian Dubuque was the first permanent settler in this area. The Fox Indians gave him permission to mine on the banks of the Mississippi. He was buried here in 1810. The marker is listed on the Iowa Historical Marker website (http://www.hmdb.org/Results.asp?State=Iowa ) and reads:

“Julian Dubuque. Miner of Mines of Spain. Founder of our City. Died March 24, 1810.”
