The lighthouse "Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos" was inaugurated on August 1, 1903. Built to mark the western tip of the island of Faial, the lighthouse was swamped by volcanic ash in a volcanic eruption that began on 16 September 1957. The eruption began offshore and eventually extended the island westward about 1 km (0.6 mi). The Lighthouse is an approx. 20 m (66 ft) high, octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, rising from a 2-story keeper's house. The first floor of the building remains buried in ash.
In 2008, the Regional Government opened the Interpretation Centre "Centro Interpretativo do Vulcão", running along the lighthouse. The tower can be visited together with the Interpretation Centre (7.00€) or separatly (1.00€). Having climbed up the spiral staircase, it offers you a great view over the eruption area, classified as protected landscape of high biological and geological interest.
