What is usually referred to in general conversation as "Perth City" is what is technically known as the "Perth Metropolitan Region", which stretches north and south, squeezed between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp (hills to the east), while the actual, legal entity that is the "City of Perth", is a somewhat small local government authority that contains the CBD and a few inner suburbs. The remainder of the space in the Perth metro area is administered by a dozen or so city councils. The City of Armadale is one of these.
Armadale lies 30kms to the east of the CBD of Perth, on the terminus of the Armadale train line. The City has a population of 60,000 plus, and an area of 560 square kilometres. Adjacent to the train station is a city centre, with a parks, memorials, and government offices. Surrounding this is the usual commercial sprawl of malls and shops. Despite its sometimes claims Armadale is just the same as any other place in Perth.
The region was first settled (by Europeans) in 1830 with a small military detachment despatched eastwards to protect the new Swan River Colony from potential dangers. From then on the population increased, roads built, homes constructed, generations lived and died. In 1985 the region was created a city. As it is today.
