All the machinery at the museum is outside, in an open area in front of the museum building or across the street by Silverton Creek, and there is no charge to view any of it.
This is the "Marlo Mud Hog" mud pump, made in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In mining country this pump could find a number of uses. It is a low pressure, high volume, diaphragm type pump capable of pumping very wet mud and small gravel (with lots of water).
Some uses that jump to mind are dewatering of shallow mines and pumping gravel to a sluice or rocker in placer mining. It might have even been possible to pump concrete with it, as the design is not hugely unlike concrete pumps of today.
Due to its bulk, it's unlikely to have been used inside a mine. Also, the mounting brackets suggest either an electric motor or gasoline engine having been used to power it, using a chain drive.
