Mr Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights, arrives home one day with Heathcliff and declares him to be a new adopted brother to his children Hindley and Catherine. Catherine takes to Heathcliff and becomes an inseparable friend, but Hindley despises him. When Mr Earnshaw dies Hindley inherits and turns Heathcliff into a servant.

Heathcliff and Catherine one day decide to take a look at nearby Thrushcross Grange. Unfortunately the dogs are out and Cathy is bitten. The Lintons, who own the Grange, take Cathy in and nurse her wounds. Cathy stays for several weeks, during which time Cathy comes close to the son of the house Edgar Linton.

Hindley’s wife, Frances, dies in child birth leaving Hindley with a son Hareton. Hindley takes to drink and abuses Heathcliff. Meanwhile Cathy accepts a proposal of marriage from Edgar Linton. Whilst discussing her marriage with one of the servants, Cathy tell of her love for Heathcliff, but that Heathcliff will not amount to anything so she is to advance herself by marriage to Edgar. Unfortunately Heathcliff hears this and runs away from Wuthering Heights.

Three years later Heathcliff returns having amassed some wealth. He has bought out Hindley’s gambling debts and now owns Wuthering Heights. At finding Cathy married to Edgar Heathcliff decides to take revenge on the couple. His first act of revenge is to marry Isabella Linton, making Heathcliff a possible inheritor of the Grange. Heathcliff treats Isabella badly.

Isabella produces a son for Heathcliff, called Linton. Cathy produces a daughter Catherine, but dies shortly after childbirth. Heathcliff is distraught and begs for the ghost of Cathy to come to him.

The young Catherine is kept away from Wuthering Heights by her father, but when she is eighteen she strays out to Wuthering Heights. There she meets Heathcliff’s son Linton and Hareton. Hareton has been kept illiterate by Heathcliff in revenge for his father’s treatment of him. Heathcliff hatches a plot to kidnap Catherine and make her marry the sickly Linton. This he does and Linton eventually dies, as does Edgar. Heathcliff is now the owner of the Grange.

Heathcliff makes Catherine a servant. She eventually falls for Hareton and they marry after the tormented Heathcliff dies. Wuthering Heights and the Grange pass back into Catherine and Hareton’s hands.
