Mission Espíritu Santo was established in 1749 by the Franciscans, the chapel being the religious center of the mission. In 1830 declining Indian populations, lack of money and political turmoil in Mexico forced the mission to close. Neglect and the use of stone for other construction projects had reduced the buildings to ruins when the Texas State Parks Dept. acquired it in the early 1930's.
Restoration efforts were undertaken by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 until 1941. Then in the 1970s the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department rehabilitated the chapel. Today the restored chapel is open to park visitors, and on special occasions during the year services are held.
