This Church has faced adversity over the years but always come out stronger in the end. The following is an except from a blog post, link here.
"Shorter Chapel AME Church of Giddings, Texas caught fire and most was destroyed. To watch their church church burn was a sad and very painful day for the church family. BUT… Sunday was a new day. This past Sunday September 11th, marked a fresh beginning, restoration and refreshed hope for the people of Shorter Chapel! People from all around the community came together to celebrate this new beginning."
On the lawn in front of the church is a Texas Historical marker that relates the history of the Church through the years. It reads as follows:
Organized in 1875, this was one of the first black churches in Giddings. The congregation was named for the Rev. James A. Shorter (1817-1887), ninth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Rev. Anthony Anderson (1843-1922), one of the founders of Shorter Chapel, provided lumber for the first church building. That structure was destroyed by a storm in 1915. Members now worship in the third building erected at this site. (1985)
