The Daily Republic is a daily newspaper in Fairfield, California.

In 2010, the newspaper published a series of articles on little known facts about Solano County.

The series was introduced with the following header:

Solano County’s diversity can be found in dramatic fashion at its far-flung corners, whether it be north, east, west or south.

A ferry on a sleepy Delta slough, a bustling Bay Area bridge, university research offices in the Central Valley and a marshy nature preserve on the edge of wine country are all part of Solano. They seem worlds apart.

The Daily Republic traveled to the far points of the compass in Solano County. We’ll spend four Mondays looking at the places and people we found.

The first article of the series covered one of only two ferries operated by the California Department of Transportation. It connects two of the largest island in the delta, Grand Island and Ryer Island.

A ferry has operated at this site since 1897 and the current craft, named J-Mack has been in service for 44 years.

Added Bonus: The article also mentions a geocache hidden on board the ferry! The captain knows all about it, but will not tell you, where it is.

In addition to our own pictures, we have included the pictures provided by the newspaper and a copy of the original article.
