It is a "stop" for fast ferries that operate along the River Thames and is also used by sight seeing river boats. Part of the pier is used to transfer passengers, from visiting cruise ships, to the shore.
The pier rises and falls with the tides thus providing safe mooring and constant deck height above the water. Regardless of tide the pier can be used throughout 24 hours.
The pier opened in the year 2000 hence its name.
