The sign-board at the site describes the change of use of this land from wetland where the local Maori caught tuna and inanga in the tidal Taipo stream, to it being the main recreation ground for the township.

The park is part of a cultural trail called ONGA TIPUNA (listen to the ancestors) 'celebrating the rich stories of the local Hapu, Ngati Paarau', initiated by TE ARA, the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, and has a Maori Pou set up by the information board.

Tuna are eels, and Inanga are whitebait. Both frequent the stream today.
