The entire Canyon de Chelly is considered to be very sacred to the Navajo Nation and access to the canyon floor is controlled by the Navajo - Navajo guides for hire can take you, either in their vehicles or you can drive your own 4x4 with a hired guide in your 4x4. There are may different sites to visit in the canyon that include petroglyphs and other ancient ruins. The one exception where you don't need a guide is access to the White house Ruins. You can hike down from the rim of the canyon on foot(on a well made and safe foot trail). I have hiked down a number of times - but my last trip I hired a guide so I could drive my truck onto the sandy valley floor and visit other locations. If you go I would recommend hiring a guide - you will learn a great deal about the history and people of Canyon de Chelly and enrich your experience. I made my image on 9/15/2012 with Linhof 4x5 and 90mm lens with black and white 4x5 film.
