This life-sized (or slightly smaller) statue of Chritopher Columbus is located in front of the Iglesia de Rosario in downtown San Salvador. The work seems to be carved from marble.
He is depicted as a slight man...perhaps young to middle-aged wearing a long robe over a skirt-like outfit. His left arm (with a missing hand) tentaively reaches out and his right is brought to his chest as if he is about to meet someone. It is set on a plinth about 4 feet high made of several stones. The accompanying plaque reads:
"CRISTOBAL COLON
DESCUBRIDOR DE AMERICA
Y FUNDADOR
EN ELLA DE NUESTRA
SANTA RELIGION
CATOLICA"
which translates as:
"CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
DISCOVERER OF AMERICA
AND FOUNDER THERE
OF OUR HOLY CATHOLIC RELIGION"
