This railroad bridge was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1936 and allowed traffic on U.S. Highway 99E to cross under the railroad line without disruption. For travelers, this would have been a notable landmark, serving as the gateway to Salem from the north. The bridge also includes a pedestrian walkway on each side, separate and above the vehicle traffic. The dedication plaque reads:
S.P.R.R. UNDERCROSSSING____ BUILT UNDER CO-OPERATIVE AGREEMENT BY THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS OREGON STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION KERN & KIBBE CONTRACTORS 1936
