Cast at the Carron Company's iron foundry in Falkirk, Scotland in 1813, during the reign on King George III, this cannon bears the number 80525 on the left-hand trunnion. On the barrel, in the space of what is known as the second reinforce, is the cipher of George III, and on the [rope] knob at the business end are the letters C V N Z inscribed into it, with the 'N' reversed as shown in the picture gallery. The term cannon specifically refers to the large guns designed to fire large shot, 42lb or 19kg, with the next size down the demi-cannon which fired 32lb or 15kg shot. This is most probably a demi-cannon as the larger ones were discontinued by the C18th as being too unwieldy.

The carriage it is mounted on is marked 24 Pd. with the War Office arrow between the digits, a carriage originally designed for a 24lb. gun and dated 21-2-5 (1805), and as such is incompatible with this cannon.

The display is on an area of grass on Marine Parade on the corner of Tennyson Street not far from the Boer War Memorial.
