The museum traces the start of its collection to 1948, when a number of paintings were purchased by the university. It was not until the 1990s that the project to construct a museum building began to take shape, and the effort was finalized in 2003 with the dedication of the current building.

According to the museum web site listed below: "Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn University is one of Alabama’s leading art museums, housing approximately 2,000 works of art ranging from traditional to contemporary. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the museum is among the top museums in the United States and stands as the center of visual arts for the Auburn community.

The goal of the museum is to engage Auburn University students, staff, members and visitors in a unique, imaginative experience. Located just minutes from Auburn University’s central campus, the museum consists of seven galleries, an auditorium, a café, gift shop and botanical gardens. As a part of the university, the museum represents the commitment and dedication Auburn has to advancing the arts community."

Many people get to Auburn University by taking exit 51 from I-85. This is the College Street exit. As one heads north into Auburn and the campus, the museum is on the right, before the intersection with Woodfield Drive. The eye is caught by the lake with the building on the far shore. Visitors take the driveway to the rear of the property, as parking and the entrance are on the east side of the building. Admission is free, although donations are welcome.

The museum name was chosen by the Auburn University Board of Trustees to honor the wife of an Auburn graduate who made a substantial gift to the building fund to commemorate their 50th wedding anniversary.
